The day after the Grand Canyon, we decided to get out of the fog & do some see some history. Pipe Springs is just outside of Kanab & has great history of the area.
The home is really old but it is in incredible condition, the home was built over a natural spring so that they would always have water through the hot summers.
Pipe Springs belonged to the LDS church & during those times, it was a "Safe Place" for the extra wives A.K.A Polygamists.... There is a door secret back door that leads to the mountain that the wives would excape out of when the marshals came.
At that time Polygamy was illegal
This is where they made butter & milk to sell in St. George
Pretty nice living room for that period of time.....it even has cabinets
I think that this kitchen is bigger than mine
Here is one the north home, there was also a south home, they are bolth surrounded by 12 inch thick rock walls
See the tower on top??? Thats where they were on the lookout for the marshall
This bull kept making the most horrible noises, it was dinner time & he wasnt getting fed fast enough.....He was huge & very ugly!
One of the wagons that the pioneers used for the "Honey Moon " trail....Couple would have to take their wagons all the way to St.George to get married & it would take months. This is where the "Honeymoon Trail" starts.
Pipe springs is also home to the very 1st Telegraph in Arizona. The person in charge at this location was a 16 year old girl
after the spring runs through the basement of the south homes, it comes out of the wall & its collected here
There were so many Polygamists wives that there was not enough room, so they built 2 of these homes for the women. At that time, if a man was found with more than 1 wife, he would go to prison, so the men sent their wives here to protect themselves..........Go Figure
